A Thanksgiving e-Letter

Dear Steph,
This is always the holiday where I miss you the most. I imagine you hosting another dinner like the ones I so dearly remember, family and friends all around, traditional dishes like turkey and Lylah's cranberries paired with the mystery of which new way you'd prepare pumpkin this year, all the hugs and conversations, watching the house take shape the way you wanted a little more each year.

Thanksgiving is also the holiday I remember as reliably producing the worst weather of the year. Snow wasn't just snow, it froze over ice, temperatures plummeted to the point of freezing pipes and backing up toilets back in the mobile home days. I see you expect another snowstorm this year, but I also figure you will find it a minor inconvenience if any. Yeah, I remember when I dismissed those snowstorms also. It quit shortly before moving south.

Down here they're talking about another 4-day rain-likely scenario. It'll be welcomed even though we just finished a 4-day 3 1/2" rain, just a start on making up for this summer's "non-soon", and a few days more will be even more welcome by all except those idiots who MUST drive through the low spots.

We three will be having our turkey day Wednesday, though this afternoon I will be teaching Rich how to make the stuffing muffins. It'll be the first batch. The second will have the benefit of turkey drippings for flavoring, but the first will mostly go with him to a Thursday pot-luck at the local Alano where he's found a home the last couple months. It's been really good for him. Jobs remain elusive in this retirement community that prides itself on its nickname "city of volunteers."

We expect the rain to extend into Friday and Saturday, the only downside being that it's the annual arts and crafts festival, the biggest sale time for all the clubs. Way we figure it, the locals might stay home due to rain - oh my! - but the snowbirds will just shrug and come anyway.

However you celebrate your holiday, hope you surround yourself with people who love you, and know we're there in our hearts.
Love, Mom
